Joint meet with ORH, Tea Time Farm,March 17th 2013
report by Beth Sutton
Hearty souls from FHC, ORH, and other clubs came together for what would be for some, the last day of hunting for 2013 on St. Patrick's day. MFH Rita Mae Brown cast her hounds in the woods near the parking area by the Run In Shed, followed by a very large group of fox hunters dressed in full rain gear to keep off the chill of 40 degree temperatures that fell to freezing throughout the morning. Steady drizzle turned to sleet that made for some deep footing and swollen creeks that could not stop the ORH hard working hounds. The foxhunting fields of riders included FHC president Reynolds Cowles, MFH Joy Crompton and members Liz King, Jennifer Cofield,Karen Bull, Mary Quinn Martin, Jennifer Nesbit, Shawnee Baker, Kay Barquin, Stephanie Guerlain, Bonnie Hanks,Cheryl Microutsicos,Nancy Howell,Beth Sutton. Among the first flight were out of town member (from Philadelphia) Dr. Hallum Hurt, Jim Finn, Paula Friedberg,George Lindbeck,Deborah Wray and Carol Robertson, all veterans of this event as they are members of both clubs. It was also great to see former FHC riders Lynne Beegle Gephard, Page Vanacek and Kevin McKenna and his wife Martha.
About an hour into the hunt, the riders were met for a check at the top of a hill near Dr. Brown's stable and residence and treated to champagne presented by servers dressed for the occasion. Moving on in a festive mood, the fun continued as riders carried on through the rain, and eventually came back to shelter their mounts in waiting trailers and to dig into a lavish buffet provided by our generous Oak Ridge neighbors. ORH secretary Lynn Stevens and her husband were among the welcoming hosts who met us at the well stocked bar,a feast of steaming casseroles and grilled meat were a welcome treat to celebrate this now famous end of season tradition at Oak Ridge.(Some of us had so much fun we had to be dragged out by tractors and trucks with tow chains! see photos) We are so grateful for Oak Ridge for having us, and look forward to returning the hospitality! See you next year.
