Farmington Hunt hosts Tri-Meet with Deep Run Hunt and Oak Ridge Fox Hunt on March 5th.
Tri-Meets were scheduled for three days consecutively with Deep Run Hunt, Farmington Hunt and Oak Ridge Fox Hunt on March 4, 5 & 6. Deep Run Hunt hosted on Friday at MFH, Polly Bance’s Byrd Hill Farm. Bance has worked hard to open country around her 350 acre farm which borders the Byrd River and fosters retired Thoroughbreds. Much of the surrounding farms, in the Kent Store area, are in easement. Guests were treated to beautiful terrain and good sport! A lovely breakfast was served at a historic cottage, restored by Polly’s husband, Teddy, on Byrd Hill Farm.
One of Farmington Hunt’s premier fixtures, Millington, was Saturday’s venue. The weather was perfect for scenting as a light rain fell earlier that morning but was gone in time for hunter’s gathering. Guest’s were shown a great time by Farmington’s Huntsman, Daron Beeney and Field Masters. Foxes ran across several farms including many that are in conservation easement and some owned (or owned by J.B. Birdsall, put into easement, and then sold). Thanks to Birdsall, the Piedmont Environmental Council and Virginia Outdoors Foundation, much of Farmington’s territory is preserved. Because of this, Farmington Hunt received the Habitat Conservation Award sponsored by the Masters of Fox Hounds Association at the Annual Meeting in NYC in January.
The Oak Ridge Fox Hunt leg of the Tri-Meet had to be cancelled for Sunday due to hard rains. However, Dr. Rita Mae Brown extended an invitation to Deep Run and Farmington members to hunt with them at any of their remaining meets, which continue after Farmington finishes the season.
The weekend offered members, of all three hunts, a chance to enjoy other territory and fellow comrades. A Hunt Ball, hosted by Farmington Hunt at Farmington Country Club, topped off the weekend proving fox hunter not only clean-up well, but know how to have a good time when off their mounts too!
