Farmington Hosts a 3-day Foxhunting Clinic

August 19-21, 2012, Millington Stables, Free Union, VA

Joy Crompton, Joint Master of the Farmington Hunt, and Liz King, 3rd flight Field Master led a successful 3-day clinic to introduce horses and riders to the many aspects of foxhunting. Nearly 16 participated over the weekend.

The first day, riders worked in Millington’s upper ring, which had been prepared with useful obstacles and freshly dragged footing. Once introductions were made, safety and control in the hunt field were emphasized. Appropriate stirrup length for cross country, use of the martingale or jumping strap for better security, keeping good distance between horses, helping others be aware of what is going on around, “Ware hole”, “Ware Staff”, and how to act accordingly. All practiced horses leaving and passing the group. Participants were then split into two groups.

Liz took the greener horses and riders to the far end of the ring to work on individual needs while Joy's group worked on backing and turning their horses in place - which comes in handy when making way for hounds and staff. They then worked over a grid after which all went outside the ring to work over uneven terrain. Joy's group found plenty of uphill and downhill jumps to practice over along with a small natural ditch. At the end of the two hours, all felt more confident and looked forward to the next day across country.

On day two, all hacked down to Millington bottom where they practiced following at a safe distance, “hold hard”,  “reverse field”, jumping hunt fences, crossing water, and opening and closing gates.

The third day was a Mock hunt at the Kennels. Just before heading off, Bonnie Hanks and horse appeared showing many examples of what NOT to do and wear. Everyone got a chuckle as Joy pointed out her tardiness, mud on her boot and sawdust on her horse, just to name a few. On the hunt, riders were treated to some beautiful terrain while watching and listening as the hounds worked. The hunt lasted about an hour and as hounds were hacking home, it began to rain. After a brief visit to the kennels and the puppies, all were invited to the club house for a nice brunch. Daron gave a talk about the hounds and demonstrated his amazing capacity with the horn, describing the different calls and how he communicates with both the hounds and the staff. Mr. Bishop then demonstrated hunting attire for both men and ladies, often comparing American vs. English traditions.
